Prasada (sweets) such as Modaka is offered to the deity in daily prayer. Shri Bal Gangadhar Tilak popularly known as Lokmanya Tilak started this in open pendals in Pune in the year 1893.įor this festival, observations include chanting of Vedic hymns and Hindu texts such as prayers and vrata ( fasting ).
The festival starts with the installation of clay idols of Ganesh, privately in homes and publicly in pandals ( temporary stages ). It begins on the fourth day ( chaturthi ) of the month of Bhadrapada ( August- September ), the sixth month of the Hindu calendar.
